Club Penguin History

The founder of Club Penguin started making games in 2000. His name was RocketSnail. If you want to see Rocketsnail's current website, check here. RocketSnail's first game was Ballistic Biscuit. This game lives on to this day. You can play the original version of this game here, on RocketSnail's site. Most Club Penguin players know this game as Hydro Hopper.

After making Ballistic Biscuit, RocketSnail made another game, and it was called "Experimental Penguins." Yep, that's right. This game was the beginning of Club Penguin. Below is a picture of the Experimental Penguins website.

Experimental Penguins was their first attempt at developing a multiplayer game. It was pretty simple. Each player could give their penguin a name, then chat and explore in a four-room world. The creators were surprised by the sudden success of the game. Sadly, Experimental Penguins was closed one year later due to server costs.

In 2001, they starting working on their multi-player strategy game again. This was quickly interrupted when companies started asking them to develop character chats for their websites. After building a couple custom chats, they decided to build the next version of Experimental Penguins, which they named "Penguin Chat."

In January of 2003, the new and improved Penguin Chat went online. This version included lots of new features like emotes, chat balloons, depth sorting (you could walk behind an object), and the ability to throw snowballs. By 2004, more than 1 million penguins had waddled around.

Penguin Chat was very good. There were new igloos, new rooms, new emotions, new items and more. In 2005, they decided to build Penguin Chat 3 to test the new client and server for the game.

On August 22, 2005 they welcomed 15,000 testers to the Club Penguin beta test. During the beta test they decided to hold a party to test the server capacity. They had the idea to giveaway party hats to encourage players to log-in at the same time, and it was a success. Thousands of penguins joined the party, and thus the idea for parties on Club Penguin was born.

The image above is the original map of Club Penguin. After 2005, Club Penguin has organized various parties, such as the Beta Test Party, Halloween Parties, St. Patrick's Day events, etc. Many players who participated in the beta test received the legendary Party Hat/Beta Hat. Players who participated in the event are often referred to as "betas" or "beta penguins."

On August 1st, 2007, Club Penguin joined the Walt Disney Company. This was an excellent decision. Disney is an fantastic company. Since then, Club Penguin has grown tremendously. Below is an image of a log-in screen for the Fashion Show 2012.

The latest huge innovation in Club Penguin came pretty recently. On May 9, 2013, Club Penguin made an app. An iPad app named "My Penguin." This app was truly amazing: you can play games, navigate on the map, and have fun in Club Penguin; just like on the web version.

That's it! Club Penguin's history began in 2000, and continues to make history today. Don't forget: history is everything, so don't forget, okay?

Waddle on!
